The London Day School educational experience develops young learners’ social and academic school readiness. We believe in discovering the best in every child and inspiring them to go beyond their expectations.
Some parents wonder why we didn’t just adopt a Montessori or Reggio Emilia approach. The answer is simple. These philosophies are dated and no longer fulfill the school readiness requirements of today’s top educational institutions. Montessori, for example, was developed over a hundred years ago, and Reggio Emilia about 80 years ago. With that said, there are still relevant and good features from these philosophies that have been incorporated into London Day School’s approach. However, they are wrapped in and support our scaffolding, investigational learning methodology and curriculum.
Montessori’s emphasis on self-directed learning, independence and providing children with hands-on materials and activities are core parts of the London Day School’s experience. Reggio Emilia’s focus on child-led project-based learning, the environment as the third teacher, and encouraging children to express themselves and explore their interests are also integral aspects of our program. We like these features because they foster a love for learning.
However, London Day School’s educational philosophy and curriculum have many distinct and unique aspects. For example, we use:
- Small Classes for Personalized Attention: Small class sizes lead to big rewards. Small classes allow teachers to provide personalized attention to students, fostering a love for learning, confidence, and improved academic achievement.
- Scaffolding and Investigational Learning: Through exploration and discovery, teachers lead children through curriculum and experiences that build upon what they already know, guiding them to deeper understanding.
- Academics: Students work through a comprehensive academic curriculum to help them meet and exceed the standards and expectations of today’s top private and public schools.
- Character Education Program: London Day School’s Character Education program helps students find their voice, develop their social and emotional IQ and build executive functioning skills. We believe “Social Smartness” is as important as Academic Readiness.
- Enrichment Village Classrooms: The school’s Enrichment Village™ houses specialized rooms for science, music, gym and library. Students explore, practice and learn from the diverse sensory, tactile and visual experiences these rooms provide. Having students move from their main classroom to other specialized rooms builds transition skills and provides new experiences throughout the day.
- Adaptability: Teachers adjust how and what they use to meet students’ learning styles. It’s all about providing students with an Engaging and Exciting Learning Experience.
By combining structured teacher-led activities with unstructured, imaginative play and project-based learning, London Day School creates a dynamic learning environment. It respects the individuality of each child, similar to Montessori and Reggio Emilia, but also emphasizes a broader range of learning experiences.
